These fonts where created to allow Macintosh users to easily read and compose Russian email and read the Relcom newsgroups in Russian. If you want general purpose Russian fonts, these are not for you. Russian fonts and System Software are available from ftp.apple.com.
To install:
System 7: Drag all the files (except the readme) into your System Folder.
System 6: You should use Font DA/Mover or Suitcase II to install these fonts. You may also install the keyboard layouts into your System file with ResEdit (only if you know how to do this).
When you are using the fonts, switch to the KOI-8 or KOI-7 keyboard layouts from the Keyboard menu. The KOI-8 layout is mapped like a Russian typewriter, and the KOI-7 layout is transliterated.
There is a utility for Mac that can handle different mappings and convert among them. It works on text files only though. It called MacTranslit and available on SUmex-Aim archives in directory info-mac/textprocessing/ as mac-translit-12.hqx. It is $25 shareware. The version in archives can convert from/to Apple Standard Cyrillic (Worldscript), KOI-8AV and old Glasnost unilingual font from Cassady & Greene. Full version include 15 conversions, including KOI-7, KOI-8OV (the one used on Relcom), CP866, Cyrillic for Windows, free fonts like Petersburg, and many others. You'd need System 7 for it to run though, but it's very fast, like 1Mb in 15 sec on Mac Plus.
